Underdog Betting Strategy: Sell the Jump After the Goal

Backing the underdog sounds like a lottery ticket: a cheap share that pays a dollar if the smaller team wins. Held to the end, it mostly is. But an underdog goal nearly doubles the price in a moment, and that jump is something you can trade. This underdog betting strategy buys the underdog's win before kickoff, sells it 15 cents above break-even after an underdog goal, and sells through a 50% stop-loss when the favourite scores. This guide explains the market from zero, walks through two real Polymarket matches, and shows how to run it as a preset in OddsFantasy.
A match result market is a bet on who wins a football match, in regular time; OddsFantasy calls it the Money Line. The favourite is the team the market expects to win, the underdog is the other one. On Polymarket each match has three markets: a home win, a draw and an away win, each with a Yes and a No. Backing the underdog means buying Yes on the underdog's win.
A winning share pays $1 once the market is settled, a losing one pays nothing, so the price works like a chance. 25¢ is odds of 4. See the guide to betting odds.
They're a fair bet, if you skip the extremes. Across 3,798 Polymarket matches from August to October 2026 with the underdog at odds 3 to 6.5 (15-33¢) before kickoff, it cost 24.5¢ on average and won 24.6% of the time.
The real long shots were different: underdogs at 10-15¢ cost 12.6¢ on average and won only 9.3%, and under 10¢ they won 5.3% at 6.4¢. That's the favourite-longshot bias that football studies keep finding, and it's why this preset stops at odds of 6.5.
A quiet start costs almost nothing: the draw keeps the upset alive. An underdog goal almost doubles the price. A favourite goal halves it, and then the underdog needs two goals to win.
On 20 October 2026 Liverpool played Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League. Real Polymarket trades on a Villarreal win:
On 13 October 2026, also in the Champions League, United were the underdog at 22¢. Atlético scored in the first minute and the price fell to 11¢. By the 20th minute it had crossed the 50% stop, and the bot sold at about 10¢. Atlético won 2-0.

The prices are fair, so the matches you tick are your edge. What a trader looks for:
What to skip: matches where the favourite owns the ball, because there the underdog rarely scores first. And in a very even match both teams can sit inside the window; untick those, or the preset buys both.
Holding for the upset. At Liverpool, Villarreal's win was worth 65¢ at two-nil up and nothing at the final whistle.
Buying the long shots. Under 15¢ the underdogs won less often than their price said.
Ticking every match. Fair prices mean your edge is in the choice.
Part of the match result presets series: back and lay the favourite, the underdog and the draw. See the back the favourite strategy, the lay the favourite strategy and the double chance betting strategy.
Prediction markets carry real risk: a share can go to zero. Only stake what you can afford to lose, you must be 18 or over, and check that Polymarket is available where you live.
Buying Yes on the underdog's win: the share pays $1 if the less-fancied team wins in regular time.
On Polymarket from August to October 2026, underdogs at odds 3 to 6.5 won about 25 times in 100, at an average price of 24.5¢.
Held to the end it's a fair bet at these odds, and the real long shots were worse than fair. Traded on the jump after an underdog goal, it's a short trade with a clear exit.
This preset sells 15¢ above break-even, which one underdog goal usually reaches, and sells at 50% below the price when the favourite scores.
