Every weekend a big favourite drops points against a team it was supposed to beat. Laying the favourite is a bet on exactly that: on Polymarket you buy No on the favourite's win, and it pays on a draw or an underdog win. This lay the favourite strategy buys that No before kickoff, sells it 12 cents above break-even after an underdog goal or a long goalless spell, and sells through a 50% stop-loss when the favourite takes control. This guide explains the bet from zero, walks through two real Polymarket matches, and shows how to run it as a preset in OddsFantasy.

What does laying the favourite mean?

A match result market is a bet on who wins a football match, in regular time; OddsFantasy calls it the Money Line. The favourite is the team the market expects to win, the underdog is the other one. To lay the favourite means betting it won't win. Exchanges do it with a lay bet; on Polymarket you buy No on the favourite's win, which pays $1 on a draw or an underdog win.

A share's price works like a chance: 48¢ is odds of about 2.1. See the guide to betting odds.

Is laying the favourite a good bet?

At normal prices it's a fair one. Across 2,621 Polymarket matches from August to October 2026 with the favourite at 45-63¢ before kickoff, its No cost 47.6¢ on average and won 48.0% of the time: 25.9% draws and 22.1% underdog wins.

Heavy favourites were different. When the favourite cost 65-75¢, its No cost 30.5¢ and won only 26.4%; at 75-90¢ it cost 19¢ and won 17.1%. Big favourites won slightly more often than their price said, so this preset skips them.

What moves the favourite's No?

  • Kickoff: 48¢
  • 0-0 at 30': 51.5¢
  • 0-0 at half-time: 55.5¢
  • 0-0 at 60': 61.5¢
  • Underdog goal at 10': 67.5¢
  • Favourite goal at 10': 28¢

Every goalless minute helps it, an underdog goal makes it jump, and a favourite goal cuts it to about 28¢: then you need an equaliser.

A real example: Sporting CP v Galatasaray

On 9 September 2026 Sporting played Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League. Polymarket prices on Sporting's No:

  • Before kickoff: about 40¢ (Sporting's win at 60.5¢).
  • 5th minute, Galatasaray score: the No passes 60¢; the sell order near 52¢ fills within a couple of minutes: +12¢ a share, about 30%.
  • 16th minute: 69¢ with Galatasaray ahead.
  • Sporting equalise at 27', then score at 57' and 63': 3-1. Every share still held paid nothing.

The favourite takes control: Real Madrid v Inter

On 8 September 2026 Madrid's No cost 38¢. Madrid scored at 14' (29¢) and again at 23', which took it to 14¢, past the 50% stop: the bot sold there. Inter pulled one back late, Madrid won 2-1, and the shares would have paid nothing.

The lay the favourite preset

Entry

  • Odds: between 1.8 and 2.7 (No at 55¢-37¢) · a normal favourite, not a giant

  • Volume / liquidity: above $1,000 / above $100 · real books only
  • Stake: $5 · small and the same every match

Exit

  • Live limit close: 12 (cents above break-even) · an underdog goal, or about an hour at 0-0

  • Merge hedged positions: on · only acts if you also hold the Yes

Schedule

  • Window: 60 to 5 min before kickoff, every 5 min, Run in live off · the pre-match price

Which matches suit laying the favourite?

The prices are fair, so the matches you tick are your edge. What a trader looks for:

  • a favourite playing away against an organised team;
  • a favourite with a big match a few days later.

What to skip: favourites chasing a title at home against a weak side.

Common mistakes

Holding after the underdog scores. At Sporting the No was worth 69¢ with Galatasaray ahead, and nothing at the final whistle.

Laying the giants. The No on favourites priced 65-75¢ won less often than its price said.

Ticking every match. Fair prices mean your edge is in the choice.

Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket from August to October 2026, with the favourite at 45-63¢, its No won 48 times in 100 at an average price of 47.6¢.

Is laying the favourite the same as double chance?

It's the same payout as the double chance on the draw or the underdog: two of the three results pay. See the [double chance betting strategy](/en/blog/double-chance-betting-strategy) for the other side, the favourite or the draw.
