Over 4.5 goals wins if a football match has five goals or more. In a match the market expects to be open it costs about 19¢ on Polymarket and wins about 20 times in 100. Its price moves fast both ways: a goalless start pulls it towards zero, and an early goal makes it jump. This over 4.5 goals strategy takes the early goal: it buys Over 4.5 before kickoff, sells eight cents above break-even, and sells through a 50% stop-loss on a quiet start. This guide explains the line from zero, walks through two real Polymarket matches, and shows how to run it as a preset in OddsFantasy.
A total goals market is a bet on how many goals both teams score together, in regular time. Over 4.5 needs five goals or more: 3-2, 4-1 and 5-0 win, and four goals or fewer, even 3-1, lose. A winning share pays $1 once the market is settled; 19¢ is odds of about 5.3. See the guide to betting odds.
Across 2,504 Polymarket matches from August to October 2026 where Over 4.5 cost 14-25¢ before kickoff, it cost 19¢ on average and won 20% of the time: a fair price. Held to the end, four bets in five pay nothing, so keep your stake small.
The money from an early goal is real, but it doesn't last: if no second goal comes, the clock takes it back by half-time.
On 13 October 2026 Villarreal played Napoli in the UEFA Champions League. Real Polymarket trades on Over 4.5:
On 17 October 2026 Espanyol played Atlético Madrid in LaLiga. Over 4.5 cost 17¢, fell to 14¢ after ten minutes and 9¢ by the 20th, and the 50% stop-loss sold at about 8¢. The only goal came in the 89th minute, so the shares would have paid nothing: the stop kept about half the stake.

Look for two attacking teams, two weak defences, or a strong side at home against a team that leaves gaps. Skip tight matches between cautious teams: there the first goal comes too late to help.
Holding after the goals. At Villarreal the shares were worth 63¢ after three goals and nothing at the whistle.
A big stake on a big payout. Odds of five or six look generous, but held to the end the bet loses four times in five.
Ticking every match. Fair prices mean your edge is in the choice.

Prediction markets carry real risk: a share can go to zero. Only stake what you can afford to lose, you must be 18 or over, and check that Polymarket is available where you live.
Five goals or more in the match, counting both teams, in regular time.
In open Polymarket matches from August to October 2026, about 20 times in 100, at an average price of 19¢.
Right after an early goal. This preset sells eight cents above break-even, which a goal in roughly the first quarter of an hour usually reaches.
Over 4.5 is cheaper and needs one more goal, so its price falls faster at 0-0 and a single goal moves it further in percentage terms. See the [Over 3.5 goals strategy](/en/blog/over-3-5-goals-strategy).
