Under 4.5 Goals Strategy: Hold Through the Goals

Under 4.5 goals is the big-cushion total. It wins if a football match ends with four goals or fewer, it costs about 83¢ in a typical match, and it wins about as often as that price says. Its whole story is how it reacts to goals: one or two early goals knock it down, and the clock lifts it straight back up, because the match still needs five goals to beat it. This under 4.5 goals strategy buys Under 4.5 before kickoff in the matches you choose, holds it through the goals, and uses a wide stop-loss only for a real goal-fest. This guide explains the line from zero, walks through two real Polymarket matches, and shows how to run it as a preset in OddsFantasy, built by hand or loaded from the strategy file.
A total goals market is a bet on how many goals both teams score together, from kickoff to the final whistle (regular time, so extra time doesn't count). No match can have half a goal, so the 4.5 line splits every match into two groups:
On Polymarket you buy shares. A winning share pays $1 once the market is settled, and a losing share pays nothing. So the price of a share works like a chance: 83¢ means about an 83% chance. OddsFantasy also shows it as decimal odds, $1 divided by the price, so 83¢ is odds of 1.20. The guide to betting odds explains the conversions.
It's a fair bet, not a bargain. Polymarket has listed the 0.5 to 5.5 goal lines on every football match it covers since August 2026. Across 5,265 of those matches between August and October 2026, Under 4.5 cost 82¢ on average ten minutes before kickoff and won 82 times in 100. The price matched the result.
That has two consequences:
Two things move the price during a match:
The typical numbers, as median Polymarket prices over the same 5,265 matches:
Right after a goal the price usually drops a little further than it should, then comes partly back. Selling in that moment gets you the worst price of the match.
On 22 October 2026, Bournemouth played AC Milan in the UEFA Europa League. These are real Polymarket trades on the Under 4.5 market, on the match clock:
Selling at 59¢ after the second goal would have cost 24¢ a share on a bet that paid a dollar. The 50% stop-loss, at about 41¢, never came close.
On 10 October 2026, Chelsea played Bournemouth in the Premier League:
The stop-loss turned a full loss into a loss of about 70%. That's its job: it doesn't save a goal-fest, it limits it.
The preset has three parts, and the strategy file contains all of them:
After the match, the exit monitor redeems the winning shares for $1 each automatically once the market settles. Holding to settlement and redeeming has no trading fee.
Download the strategy file on this page. In the terminal, switch on semi-auto entries, tick your matches, open Auto entries, choose Run or schedule a preset and click Upload strategy file. OddsFantasy saves both presets, loads the schedule and previews your matches. It lands on Confirm, with matches that don't pass yet added as pending, and starts the auto exit alongside. Click Start schedule.
The odds window skips the extremes; picking matches is your job, and it's where an edge comes from. What a trader looks for:
What to skip: a strong favourite against a much weaker team. That's where scores like 5-1 come from.
Selling in a panic after two early goals. In the Milan match it cost 24¢ a share on a bet that paid $1. The stop-loss is there for the real disaster; let the clock do the rest.
Skimming a few cents. Selling at 86¢ after buying at 83¢ pays the spread and a trading fee on the way out, so the gain shrinks to almost nothing. Holding and redeeming has no trading fee.
Staking big because it feels safe. Even at 83¢, Under 4.5 loses about one match in five, and each loss costs about five wins.
Ticking every match. The prices are fair, so the matches you choose are your edge.
This guide is part of the football totals presets series, one lesson for every goal line from Over 0.5 to Under 5.5: see the Under 2.5 goals trading strategy, the Under 3.5 goals strategy and the Over 2.5 goals strategy. To lock in a profit on any position, read how to hedge on Polymarket.
Prediction markets carry real risk: a share can go to zero. Only stake what you can afford to lose, you must be 18 or over, and check that Polymarket is available where you live.
It's a bet that the match ends with four goals or fewer, counting both teams, in regular time. Five goals or more and it loses.
On Polymarket between August and October 2026 it won 82 times in 100 across 5,265 matches, at an average price of 82¢. The price is a fair estimate of the chance.
Usually not in a panic. After two goals the match still needs three more, and the price climbs back with every quiet minute. A wide stop-loss handles the rare goal-fest.
The most a share can make is the gap to $1, and selling early pays the spread and a fee. Redeeming a winning share after the match, which the exit monitor does automatically, has no trading fee.
Under 3.5 costs less (about 71¢ in a normal match) and pays more, but a second early goal hurts it much more. Under 4.5 costs more, pays less, and survives two goals. See the [Under 3.5 goals strategy](/en/blog/under-3-5-goals-strategy).
